Postvention is the system of care and support given to a loss survivor in the wake of a suicide death. Prevention is the work done to stop suicide death.
No. People who have attempted a suicide but didn't die are known as attempt survivors. This should not be lumped together with survivors of a suicide loss.
Loss due to suicide is traumatic and complex. It brings up emotions not typically seen when there is a death by illness or accident. If those emotions are not dealt with and processed, long term effects such as PTSD and acute depression can occur. In some circumstances, unresolved grief can result in additional suicide attempts or completions. Research shows that people who immediately begin to talk about their suicide loss have a better chance of healing at a faster rate.
