The term 'postvention' was developed in the late 1960's by Dr. Edwin Shneidman to define those left behind after a suicide.
To date, few people know the term 'postvention' because emphasis is put upon 'prevention' work.
Prevention is certainly important but tends to overshadow postvention efforts.
It is time for change!
The term 'postvention' is a concept developed by Dr. Edwin Shneidman to accurately explain the process of suicide grief and bereavement. Support for loss survivors should not have a one-size-fits-all modality and we need to match the type of grief services to how a loss survivor views and processes their own circumstances.
An estimated average of 135 people are affected by one suicide loss. Those people seek services. We here at Postvention Collective train people how to effectively support and walk alongside survivors so they can ultimately heal faster.
Postvention is most effective when an upstream approach is followed to support the loss survivor. By working with people in the healthcare, education, insurance, funeral services, cosmetology, baristas and many other sectors where loss survivors live everyday, those bereaved have a greater chance of a quicker and more effective healing.
